Do you ever feel like you were born in the wrong era? I do all the time. I love all things 40’s and 50’s and often wonder if I was born in the wrong year. My 18 year old even said “Mom I think you were meant to be born in the 50’s, what happened?”
From a young age, I wanted to be that vintage housewife and homemaker. I have always been the type of person that loves taking care of people (kids, a spouse, your parents). Doing the cooking and baking, cleaning and making your home nice for everyone to see and live in.
My closet is something from the 40’s and 50’s. My collection of dresses (that keeps growing), purses that I pick up from different places, my jewelry that is taking over the dresser, and my shoes that are migrating outward from the wall. I love going to vintage stores hunting for that perfect treasure to add to my collection. I go to Electric Lemonade Shop at least twice a month to see what new items they might have, Buffalo Exchange is another great place to go, when you have time of course, because you have to search. It is quite interesting because I wore a dress that I picked up from a vendor at Viva 16 to work, and my boss told me that I looked like a picnic table. I was very offended by her comment, but when I thought about it, I just let it go since it doesn’t matter what anyone else really thinks, I love how I am and I am not ashamed to express my style.
My bedroom is definitely all vintage, with my vanity table and bench, pictures of Audrey and Marilyn Monroe on the walls, trunks from the 40’s that still have the steam-liner sticker from Holland, my sewing mannequin, vintage suitcases, a red vintage train make up case and I could just go on and on, but you get the idea.
I have my kitchen with all the vintage items and it continues throughout my entire house. I even have the backyard decorated with vintage items. My husband is constantly commenting about how our house is turning into a vintage store where someone could come shop. I even picked me up a vintage bicycle to ride. All I need now is a car from the 50’s with a vintage caravan and I will be set.
Everything was made in the USA back then and not in China, and it lasted longer (obviously).
Maybe I love it all because it feels so natural to me. I feel like I can be me and I am not judged or have anything to prove.
Times were so different back then and people actually enjoyed life. In today’s world everything seems fake and people act like they have something to prove. Nobody enjoys life or at least I do not see it.
I look at kids today and they are so different. Even when I was younger we would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back home by the time the streetlights came on. Some parents would yell or whistle loudly when it was time to come home. Other than that, no one was able to reach us all day long. And we were just fine.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable or satellite TV, no video movies or DVD’s, no surround-sound or CD’s, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms! Kids wont even go outside anymore.
We had FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. Some of us ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th thru 14th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to friends’ homes and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!
What happened to those days? That is how I try and live my life each and everyday! Sometimes I feel like I am alone, but that is OK because I enjoy being myself and am proud to represent days where we can live as we chose. We act as we want and do what we want and we do not live by other peoples standards!!!!
